Deborah has a bold, visually rich style which is multi layered and dynamic to watch. Inspired by a strong theme or narrative, Deborah fuses character, text, physicality and humour with abstract ideas.
The studio environment is fun, creative and pushes artistic boundaries. Deborah has developed a strong movement vocabulary and designs theatre and dance based devising workshops to encourage a collaborative process. She always starts on her own in the studio creating movement inspired by the theme, play or production style.
This directorial and devising style has faciliated work with people of all ages and abilities for live audiences, camera and public spaces in the commercial, independent and community sectors.
Choreographer, Director & Movement Director
Deborah, recently has been working as a movement director and choreographer for theatre and musicals ( National Theatre, National Youth Theatre, Polka Theatre, YMT UK ) combining her experience as an actress and graduate of Drama from Manchester University with Dance ( trained at The Royal Ballet School, Bush Davies, TRINITYLABAN, Conservatoire for Contemporary Dance).
Deborah has freelanced for Rambert Dance Company since 2007. Highlights included directing the remount of INALA with additional choreography for the Chekhov International Theatre Festival, Moscow, Sadlers Wells and ATG UK Tour, Summer 2015.
Deborah also worked as assistant choreographer to Rambert’s Artistic Director, Mark Baldwin on DARK ARTERIES, a new work for the entire company of Rambert which premiered May 2015 at Sadlers Wells with a 36 piece Brass Band on stage.
In addition to freelance choreography, Deborah also set up her own company in 2011 to direct, choreograph and produce her own multi-layered dance-theatricals. Having developed a hIghly theatrical and fun style influenced by Pina Bausche, Beckett, Guillermo del Toro, DV8 and Theatre de Complicite, Deborah's dance tales with a twist, create an alternate view of reality which highlights the universal human experience.
The work is original, wildly unexpected and full of humour fusing storytelling, digital arts
and theatre with contemporary and popular dance styles.
It all started with a love of ballet, a lifechanging moment watching the musical CATS and a secret passion for creative dance. As a young dancer Deborah performed at The Royal Opera House in the Royal Ballet’s Nutcracker, The London Coliseum in The Boston Ballet’s Don Quixote with Nureyev, the London City Ballet tour of Carmen, Sadlers Wells with The Young London Ballet Company and was a backing dancer for Paula Abdul on Motormouth TV. She trained at The Royal Ballet School and Bush Davies before double knee surgery propelled a new career trajectory. Deborah graduated from Manchester University with a BA (Hons) Drama 2:1 in 1995.
Deborah worked as an actor in plays, musicals, TV, devised works and physical theatre for 6 years. She was awarded a Licenciate from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance and gained a professional diploma from Trinity-Laban Conservatoire for Music & Dance acknowledging a deep passion for contemporary dance, choreology and choreography.
Being inspired by unusual stories and interesting projects, the variety of work is diverse including choreography in theatre & dance productions, movement consultation and motion capture for playstation games. A professional and community dancefilm at Kew Palace, Site-immersive pop-up shows, Museum Lates, Musicals, a Jazz Opera, film, commercials and TV sequences.
Deborah has worked as a teacher of contemporary, ballet, physical theatre, movement for actors, jazz, tap and choreography. This ranges from work at Urdang, Trinity Laban, Arts Educational School, BRIT School, CAT programmes at Dance East, Trinity Laban & Dance Xchange, Youth Music Theatre, White City Youth Theatre Company, Company Three, Rambert Dance Company and lecturing technique, choreography and professional practise at the University Campus Suffolk,
As a freelance Choreographer, Movement Director and Producer, commissions have been from the professional, community and commercial sectors for clients including Rambert Dance Company,MJZ for Cadbury, Comedienne Ishi Khan Jackson, East London Dance, Orleans House Museum Lates, Historic Royal Palaces, TrinityLaban, Animate Orchestra, DanceEast, DanceXchange, Heritage Lottery Fund, New Movement Collective, National Theatre, National Youth Theatre, Animate Orchestra, Youth Music Theatre UK, Islington Community Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, Millfield School, SONY Playstation, Magnum TV:Chris Moyles Quiz Night, Square-Enix (Lara Croft) and Loki Productions, Southwark, Enfield ,Wandsworth Council and the GLA.
